Most countries all over the world are at least bi-lingual, us English folk are very lucky in one sense that many others learn English as a second language and speak it remarkably well but I actually see this as a disadvantage, we are not motivated to stretch our minds and learn about other cultures as much as they might be to learn our own.
I decided that I wanted to try to pick up a second language, not necessarily to become fluent or even “very good”, but to at least try to walk down the path and see where it took me.
It seems, quite far, as many years on I am still trying to complete my Duolingo every day, I’ve watched countless German movies and know many good German songs. I’ve travelled all over Germany: Berlin (3 times), Munich, Frankfurt, Aachen, Nuremberg, Hamburg and likely more that I’ve missed off the list and I still have the itch to go back again, I love the culture and the people, the architecture, and the language - while I started with a curiosity, I feel that these are the reasons that keep me wanting to learn and practice even more.
